Jado Egi

Spear Squid, Japanese Flying Squid

The Midwinter Shore-Fishing Revolution

Haifukugata / Jado Edition

Commonly known as: Jado Egi®

"You'll catch more with bait on it! I'm a renegade—that's just how I roll!"

The midwinter squid once catchable only by boat—
now within reach from the shore

From December through March, in the dead of winter after the bigfin reef squid (Aori squid) season has ended—the season when squid anglers vanish from the breakwaters. Yet offshore, huge schools of spear squid and Japanese flying squid are on the move.

Now you can target from the breakwater the midwinter squid that used to be reachable only by boat. That is the Haifukugata / Jado Edition, commonly known as the 'Jado Egi®'.

Midwinter spear squid & Japanese flying squid

The fusion of bait × egi
breaks through their wariness

Spear squid and Japanese flying squid are even warier than bigfin reef squid. With an ordinary egi (squid jig) they grab on only for an instant, then let go right away. Electric-float bait fishing has strong bait appeal, but the depth is fixed and it lacks mobility.

The Jado Egi® fuses the mobility of an egi with the drawing power for squid of bait. Sweep it to search a wide area, then use the scent, taste, and texture of the bait to create a situation where the squid "grabs on and won't let go." The holding time is dramatically extended, widening the hooking chances even for beginners.

The effect of bait

When the school moves in—
10, 50, even 100 squid

Spear squid and Japanese flying squid travel in schools. Hit the timing when they come inshore and you can expect overwhelming results. 10, 50, even 100 squid in a single night is no dream.

Because the bait keeps the squid holding on longer, even beginners can rack up catches with the Jado Egi®. Enjoy serious winter squid fishing from the breakwater—no boat required. That is the greatest appeal of the Jado Egi®.

V3 type

Matched to the conditions—
fall rates V0 · V1 · V2 · V3

On a midwinter fishing ground, the current, depth, and wind change from moment to moment. The Jado Egi® accounts for the balance with bait attached and offers four fall-rate variations.

V3 (27g / fall rate 0.5–0.8 sec per 1m) is the trump card for fast current, deep water, and strong wind. Ideal for reaching the bottom quickly and lying in wait with a bottom stay.

V2 (19g / fall rate size 1.5–2 sec per 1m) sits between V1 and V3. Effective in slightly deeper water or where there is current.

V1 (12g–16g / fall rate 3–4 sec per 1m) is an all-rounder for standard breakwaters and tetrapod zones. Recommended for beginners.

V0 (11g–15g / fall rate 9–15 sec per 1m) is for shallow water and gentle current. Fall it slowly to maximize hang time.

Bait preparation
makes or breaks your catch

To draw out the full performance of the Jado Egi®, the freshness of the bait and how you attach it are absolutely critical. Squid are real gourmets and respond poorly to stale or dried-out bait.

The recommended baits are kibinago (silver-stripe round herring), chicken tender, and strips of horse mackerel (aji) or mackerel (saba). Salt-curing the chicken tender and letting it rest in the fridge for a few days firms up the flesh and improves how long the bait lasts. Fastening both ends of the bait firmly with wire prevents it from slipping during sweeps.

Using an amino-acid spray or squid attractant alongside boosts the drawing power for squid even further.
